(iTers News) - Micron Technology, Inc. is speeding up the roll-out of PCM, or phase change memory chips.

With the volume production of 45 nm 1Gb PCM-based multichip package, or MCPs solution kicking off to a faster start to supply mobile phone vendors like Nokia, the memory chip maker recently has sampled a 512 Mb PCM plus 512Mb LPDDR2 MCP.

PCM provides enhanced boot time, simplifies software development and boosts performance with overwrite capability. It also provides very low power consumption and extremely high reliability. But, it still remains costlier, compared with NAND flash chips.

Micron's 45nm PCM solution is currently targeted for use in mobile phones bringing enhanced capabilities, but the chip maker is ramping up a roadmap to address smartphones and media tablet markets in the foreseeable future.

"Micron continues to lead the charge in advanced, innovative memory solutions," said Michael Rayfield, Vice President of Micron's Wireless Solutions Group. "Our PCM product portfolio is just the latest demonstration of this innovation."
