As AI and IoT technologies are widely adopted across a growing number of devices, complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor or CMOS image sensor market is forecast to keep growing through 2021.

According to market research firm IC Insights, worldwide CMOS sensor chip market is forecast to  grow at an annual average rate of 8.7% growth over the next five years to reach US$15.9billion in 2021.

In 2017 alone, the CMOS image sensor market is expected to hit up to US$11.5 billion, a  9% jump from US$10.5 billion in 2016.

CMOS Image sensor is a chip that converts light signals into a string of digital signals –0s and 1s to represent images.  The chips are  embedded in devices such as digital cameras and smartphones to enable them to take in light signals and process them in a string 0s and 1s to render image information.

The research firm noted that strong growth has begun in CMOS image sensor market, due to rapid and wide spread of digital imaging applications including automotive, medical, machine vision, security, wearable systems, virtual and augmented reality applications, and user-recognition interfaces.
