(iTers News) - Marvell Semiconductor Inc. joined a Wi-Fi Alliance-led joint-development effort to commercialize TDLS, or tunneled direct link set-up technology and then integrate it into a next generation wireless devices.

Marvell said today it was qualified and chosen by the Wi-Fi Alliance to join the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED TDLS test bed program.

Through its membership in the Alliance, Marvell, along with other wireless industry leaders, will collaborate on development and integration of TDLS algorithm into next-generation wireless devices.

TDLS is a new breed of communications technology to enable mobile devices to intelligently communicate amongst themselves to connect and manage traffic loads, resulting in dramatic cutbacks in traffic congestions.

"Marvell is dedicated to working with associations like the Wi-Fi Alliance to develop industry-wide standards that improve wireless performance, accelerating consumer adoption of Wi-Fi technologies in the home," said Bart Giordano, director of wireless marketing at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc.

"The Wi-Fi CERTIFIED TDLS program will significantly reduce the complexity required to set up and manage networked devices, simplifying consumers' experience in creating a truly connected home,” he added.

Marvell plans to implement the TDLS technology across its Avastar® family of wireless chips.

TDLS is designed to simplify the setup and management of networked devices and provides the ability to securely stream content through the automatic discovery and setup of direct Wi-Fi links between devices that are connected to the same access point.

Specific use cases for TDLS include the automatic connection of a media server, digital television and Wi-Fi enabled speakers or direct printing between a digital camera and networked printer.

TDLS also improves overall Wi-Fi network performance and increases network capacity with existing infrastructure.

Additionally, it enables devices to maintain network connectivity to the access point and direct links to other devices concurrently. Marvell has built TDLS support into its entire Avastar product line for consumer devices, including the Marvell Avastar 88W8787 Plug, which has been selected for the test bed.
