(iTers News) -Video News-  ARM Technology Symposium 2012 opened on Nov. 20 in Seoul, demonstrating how intelligently and power-efficiently ARM’s low-power CPU and GPU processor family power and control a wide spectrum of connected devices from smart phone to tablet PCs to server computers.

The Cambridge, U.K.-based CPU architecture IP provider even showcased a solution that is built in a central control box to control all devices like sensors and other peripherals in the smart grid system.

At a morning keynote session, Ian Drew, executive vice president with ARM said that the industry has about 6 billion connected devices on the Internet almost 22 years after the Internet debuted in 1990.

“Most of the devices have gone the Internet over the last two years. This whole revolution of phones and tablets have been driven not by one company, but a collection of companies, changing the way which technology is viewed and how the industry works,’ he emphasized.

He manly contributed the proliferation of connected devices to ARM’s low power processor cores and ever-expanding ecosystem. As of today, ARM has about 1,000 partners all over the world, of which 50% are based in Asia.

For example, smart phones and tablet PCs now become personal devices of people, as they carry them around the clock wherever they go.

The rapid penetration of feature-rich and video-centric smart phones and tablet PCs come with huge improvements in CPU and GPU performances.

According to Ian Drew, graphic, or GPU power on smartphones and tablet PCs has leapfrogged by a factor of 20 times, allowing users to experience game console graphics-like videos on their phones and tablet PCs.

CPU processor performance also skyrocketed by a magnitude of 15 times, mainly powered by dual core or quad core CPUs. But these exponential gains in the CPU and GPU power have not sacrificed power consumption.

Data traffic is also on the rise, with the date rate growing by a factor of 15 times. Pixel density of a screen is also going through the ceiling. All combined, this mobile revolution has created trillion dollars of businesses for all the payers in the mobile ecosystem, he said.
