(iTers News) – Samsung Electronics said its ATIV series of Windows 8 Smart PCs are to go on sale later this week across the world.
At a product launch show held in Seoul today, Samsung unveiled ATIV Smart PC and Smart Pro PC multi touch-enabled convertible PC family with a detachable keyboard .
Running on Windows 8 OS, the 11.6-inch convertible PCs feature innovations and diversity in the UI, or user interface - the way that people interact with machines
The ATIV series of convertible PCs harbor Atmel’s maXTouch touch controller to power its multi-touch screen, allowing users to directly open on-screen menus by just tapping the on-screen icons or files with their fingers.
They also incorporate Samsung’s proprietary S-Pen UI, enabling users to scribble down, or paint whatever on the screen with its stylus pen.
Samsung also has built in MEMS gyro chips and GPS modules into both of the Smart PC and Smart PC Pro, enabling users to activate a variety of location-based apps like GPS and AR, or augmented reality.

Eye on mainstream users
Designed for mainstream users, especially mobile road warriors who prioritize mobility, the Smart PC convertibles run on 32 bit Window 8 OS and Intel Atom processor-based CPU (Z2760), sporting HD LCD screen of 1366 x 768 pixels.
Scaling 744 grams with no keyboard, it is 9.9mm thin, and its built-in battery lasts as long as 14.5 hours. It has also a built-in HDD of 64GB, and incorporates an internal memory or RAM of 2GB.
It has a built-in 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. It plans to fetch for 1.05 million won, approximately US$900.
System boot-up in less than 10 seconds
Targeting professional businessmen and early-adopters, Smart PC Pro runs on 64-bit Windows 8 OS and Intel Core i5 processor-based 3rd G Ivy Bridge CPU.
The Smart PC Pro has a built-in 128GB SDD as a main storage system. As the SSD is quicker than HDDs in bringing up OS, it can boot up a whole system just in a matter of 8.5 seconds. The NAND flash chip-based SSD also allows users to activate Internet web browsing just in a split-second, or 0.5 seconds.
The Smart PC Pro sports full HD screen of 1902 x 1080 and is as thin as 11.9 mm. Samsung has built in a metal blade fan system to achieve that thin form factor without compromising cooling power. Compared with plastic cooling fan system, the metal fan can fan out 30% more powerful cooling winds.
It has a built-in 5MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front facing camera. Weighing 888 grams except for a keyboard, it plans to sell for 1.59 million won, or approximately US$1,440.
