(iTers News) -Key to the commercial viability of wearable eyeglasses like Google Glass is how to create compelling enough applications to justify users' investments on them, whether they are enterprises, or individual consumers. AR, or augmented reality technology is opening up new markets for wearable eyeglasses, enabling it to unearth yet untapped applications.

A case in point is wearable computing solution provider Ubimax's AR-based order picking system. The application software developer joins hands with Vuzix Corporation, a maker of video eyewear and smart glasses, to develop hands-free warehouse solutions to put it to commercial test for world's largest logistics company DHL's warehouse management  system, or WMS.

Coming complete with Vuzix's wearable computing eyeglass M100 Smart Glasses and Ubimax's warehouse “vision picking” software, the Ubimax order picking system works in sync with DHL's WMS to enable the smart glass-worn warehouse floor workers to recognize objects in real time, and read barcodes, navigate through shelves of warehouses, and gather and integrate information in the system

The benefits were a simplified and improved user experience, increased worker speed, reduction of errors and improved flexibility of core processes, as it can be done with no hands.

During the pilot test with DHL's WMS, for example, 10 order pickers used the M100 Smart Glasses and picked more than 20,000 items, fulfilling 9,000 orders within the given time frame. As a demonstrated result, staff was able to operate much faster and error free.

The pilot proved that augmented reality offers added value to logistics and resulted in a 25 percent efficiency increase during the picking process.

Paul Travers, president and CEO of Vuzix, said “Our M100 Smart Glasses combined with Ubimax’s software is an excellent warehouse picking solution for DHL as it provides for supply chain innovations through simplified operations. Augmented reality has shown great promise for logistics in warehousing operations and is estimated to account for approximately 20% of all logistics costs, and approximately for 55% to 65% of the total cost of warehousing operations. This indicates that AR has the potential to significantly reduce cost by improving the picking process. The Vuzix/Ubimax solution greatly enhances accuracy and efficiency, boosts productivity and makes it easier for the user with its hands-free operation.”
