(iTers News) - Qualcomm Inc. today took the wrap off a new generation of Snapdragon quad-core mobile chipset families –Snapdragon 600 and 800 series. .

During his pre-opening keynote speech, Qualcomm CEO Dr. Paul Jacobs said that Snapdragon 600 and 800 series will ship sometime in the second quarter and second half of this year, respectively.

”Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor was designed to deliver exceptional performances-rich graphics and enhanced user experiences. In terms of performance, it outperforms all competitions and even the newest. That’s not all. We have a lot better chip. This is a flagship Snapdragon 800 chipset that is the most advanced wireless processor ever built. This is the first super-premium processor for smart phones, tablets, and computers. This chip will deliver 75% better performance than its predecessor,” Dr. Jacobs said.

All combined, he said, Snapdragon 600 and 800 series have already secured over 50 design wins

The 800 series also leverage parallel LTE advanced to support download speed of up to 150 mega bits per second. That’s fast enough to seamlessly render full HD images. The 800 processor even incorporate a new generation of IEEE802.11 ac ViVe wireless circuitry.

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., its wholly-owned subsidiary is sampling the Snapdragon 600 and 800 processors

As Dr. Jacobs said, the Snapdragon 800 zeros in on premium mobile and computing devices. It embeds new quad core Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, Hexagon v5 DSP, and its latest 4G LTE Cat 4 modem in a single silicon die.

As powerful as one in PCs.

Compared with Snapdragon S4, it delivers up to 75% more performance, but consumes 40% less power, as its ramp up to a 28nm High Performance for mobile (HPm) technology node ensures exceptionally low power. Each core of the new Krait 400 quad-core CPU boasts 2.3GHz clock speed. Additionally, asynchronous SMP architecture provides dynamic power sensing and control for peak performance per core, while extending battery life without the use of specialized cores

The 800 series is also built around Qualcomm’s proprietary power-saving asynchronous SMP architecture that also underlies Snapdragon S3 and S4. Asynchronous SMP, or symmetric multiprocessing is a sort of dynamic power sensing chip architecture that automatically applies different voltages to each of the four cores depending required computing loads and this control peak performance per core. When a core performs a less important and low computing load requirement jobs, it inputs low voltages to make the best use of power budget.

It built-in new Adreno 330 GPU delivers more than 2x performance for compute applications over the current Adreno 320 GPU. It incorporates 2x32bit LP-DDR3 memory peripherals at 800MHz with industry-leading memory bandwidth of 12.8GBps

Play more, consume less

Its embedded Hexagon DSP V5 delivers floating point support, dynamic multithreading and expanded multimedia instructions for enhanced low power performance. New IZat ™ location technology combines multiple tracking systems into a single high performance, highly accurate navigation platform for auto and pedestrian applications. Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processors offer fully integrated connectivity and a wide variety of communication options.

It also implements 4G LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation feature to maximize radio frequency bandwidth, while supporting world multimode and multi-band using wafer level package (WTR1605).

Another outstanding feature is its breakthrough multimedia capabilities that support ultra- definition 2160p 4K image rendering. “It not only can capture ultra D image, but also playback and display them,” stressed Dr. Jacobs.

Snapdragon 600; 1.9GHz horsepower

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor targets high-end mobile devices. The 600 processor incorporated a new Krait 300 quad-core CPU that has clock speeds of up to 1.9GHz per core, Adreno 320 GPU, supporting LPDDR3 memory. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor is sampling now and is expected to be available in commercial devices by second quarter 2013.
