(iTers News) – MediaTek has mapped out its SoC platform roadmap for wearable devices and IoT unveiling LinkIt, an integrated development platform in what the chipmaker hopes would lay out the groundwork for its foray into the fast-growing IoT markets.

Built around MediaTek’s Aster System on Chip, or SoC, the LinkIt comes complete with an integrated communication module and a modular-type software stack.

It also supports a reference design, enabling device makers to create various form factor Internet connected devices.

The Aster SoC is the smallest SoC currently available on the market, measuring 5.4x6.2mm in a packet size

The LinkIt platform also supports over-the-air, or OTA updates for apps, algorithms and drivers, enabling users to “push and install” software stack named MediaTek Capsule from their phones or computers to devices built with MediaTek Aster.

The plug-in software development kit, or SDK for Arduino and VisualStudio is available, too. Its support for Eclipse is planned for the fourth quarter.

“MediaTek is now in a unique position to assume leadership by accelerating development for wearables and IoT, thanks to our LinkIt platform,” said J.C. Hsu, general manager of new business development at MediaTek.

The launch of LinkIt is a part of MediaTek’s wider initiative for the developer community called MediaTek Labs which will officially launch later this year. MediaTek Labs will stimulate and support the creation of wearable devices and IoT applications based on the LinkIt platform.
