MWC 2013 (iTers News) - Mozilla has rallied 17 key mobile operators and 4 smart phone device makers behind its Web-based Firefox OS to bring world’s first Firefox OS smart phones to market.

At a press conference held at MWC 2013 in Barcelona, Spain, the non-profit open-source OS organization said that the first FireFox OS smart phone will be available in mid-2013 in emerging markets like in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela.

So far, total 17 mobile service carriers across the world have been championing Firefox OS as a OS platform for budget-priced smart phones, including America Movil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefonica, Telenor, TMN and VimpelCom.

The Web-based OS architect is also working together with Alcatel (TCL), LG, ZTE, and Huawei to build the FireFox Os smart phones around Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Firefox OS is an open Web standard-based OS that enables every feature to be written and developed as Web language HTML 5-based applications.

In addition, Mozilla has signed strategic alliances with key content and service partners to expand its OS ecosystem like Firefox Marketplace.

"Firefox OS brings the freedom and unbounded innovation of the open Web to mobile users everywhere," said Gary Kovacs, CEO, Mozilla. "With the support of our vibrant community and dedicated partners, our goal is to level the playing field and usher in an explosion of content and services that will meet the diverse needs of the next two billion people online."
