(iTers News) -Today, I happened to grip Samsung’s Galaxy Round smart phone with a 5.7-inch curved OLED display. True enough, both of its side fringes get bended slightly upward like a concave mirror, but it isn’t new technology breakthrough, but a natural elastic force that bends the screen.

The OLED panel itself is dead flat, but can be bended by force, because it is made of a plastic substrate, not a glass. Bending it is quite simple. All you have to do is just to fit it into a slightly curved metal housing –the way that a curved TV is manufactured. I have no idea on how to fit a PCB board and a secondary battery into the curved shape.

But, I know that a flexible PCB is already commercially available, even if it is not flexible enough to be designed into any form. When it comes to a secondary battery, a pouch-type battery is commercially feasible, too. Rather than being packaged in a metallic cylinder and glass-to-metal electrical feed-through for insulation, the pouch-type battery cell is housed in a conductive foil. So, it gives flexibility in battery design.

My first hands-on experience tells that Samsung has a convincing reason for the curved screen design form factor. The curved screen smoothly nestles in the curvature of my hand grip. The touch feeling was great, as it feels more natural, giving more texture.

The curved shape also allows me to interact with the Galaxy Round smart phone in more natural and intuitive way. When I put in on the table and slightly sway it to the right and left, its screen wakes up out of sleep mode and display information on date, temperature, time, missed call, and battery charging level.

A simple tilting of the device also spreads out screen images page after page in a panoramic view. The Bounce UX is another eye-catching user experience,  allowing me to move back and forth between music tracks with a brief press on the left side and right side.

When a music player is on, for example, a brief press to the left side plays back a previous music track, while my press to the right allows me to jump to next music track.
