(iTers News) - SK Hynix Inc. today started operation of its M12 12-inch wafer fabrication line, which is located in the Cheong-ju fabrication facility.

Running at a monthly capacity of 40,000 wafers, the fab line is a sort of a hybrid wafer line that can be configured either for production of high-end DRAM chips, or NAND flash memory chips, as well as for both, depending on cyclical ups and downs in market demand.

SK Hynix broke ground in late 2007, and since then had dragged its feet on the construction through 2010, one of the industry’s worst recession period, because the chipmaker ran short on investment funds to keep its construction projects going

The M12 12-inch wafer fab is the latest addition to its constellation of 6 wafer facilities. In the Cheongju facility, the chipmaker has been operating one 12-inch wafer fab and two 8-inch fabs.

The chip maker has also a 12-inch wafer fab in Wuxi, China, while operating another 12-inch fab and one 8-inch fab in Icheon, Korea, home to its research and development activities.
