(iTers News) – As a bunch of full HD movies and 3D games are now moving around and playing back in tablet PCs and smartphones, GPU, or graphics processor unit cores are increasingly important Lego blocks to power these on-the-go personal entertainment devices.

According to market research firm In-Sat NPD, this growing proliferation of full HD video contents will likely to accelerate the integration of GPUs, or cores into SOC chips designs. The research firm forecasts, “In 2011, only 40% of SOC TAM, or total available market adopted at least one dedicated GPU, but the number of SoCs using GPUs as well as the number of GPU cores per SoC will be increasing throughout 2015 when the mobile SOC TAM top 3.1 billion devices.

Intel Corp. and Imagination Technologies will lead the GPU market because of their dominance in PCs and smartphones, respectively. Combined, the two companies are projected to comprise 61.3% of the GPU technology mobile serviceable available market in 2011, the market research firm forecasts. Other GPU vendors include AMD, ARM Holdings PLC, Digital Media Professionals (DMP), Imagination Technologies, Intel Corp., NVIDIA Corp., Qualcomm Inc., and Vivante Corp.

NPD In-Sat also predicts smartphones will represent 43% of total mobile phone shipments in 2015 –a big jump from 20$ in 2010.
