(iTers News) - A Chinese research team of Fudan University has developed lithium-ion battery that can maintain 70% of battery energy performances even when the temperature falls below -70 degrees Celsius.

The developments are expected to pave the way for smartphones and EVs to properly operate even in the ultra-low temperature regions like Artic and Antarctic as well as cosmos.

Lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery in which lithium ions move from anode to cathode during discharge and charging process.

When the temperature decreases, the electrolyte solution starts to freeze which disturbs the ion movement and eventually decreases the energy efficiency of the lithium-ion batteries. The energy efficiency decreases by 50% when the temperature falls below -20 degrees Celsius, and the battery doesn’t work when the temperature falls below -70 degrees Celsius. It is the reason why the smartphone and EV batteries run out so fast in winter.

The Chinese research team has solved the problem by developing and adopting an electrolyte solution material that doesn’t freeze even when the temperature falls to -84 degrees Celsius. As the electrolyte doesn’t freeze even in ulta-low temperature, it will not disturb the movement of lithium-ions. The new batteries are also built with new electrodes made of carbon-based organic materials instead of metals. It helps the normal ion movement and reaction even when the electrolyte starts to freeze.

The professor of the research team said “The new lithium-ion batteries will help further development of electronic devices and robots used in polar and high-altitude regions and space exploration.
