Making a glitzing debut of the brand smart phone models at its Unpack ceremony held on Feb 25th in Barcelona, Spain, one day before the opening of MWC 2018, Samsung demonstrated how AR technology will work together with AI-based voice recognition technology Bixby to revolutionize the way that users search Internet for information. But, the AR technology also work together with its built-in cameras to create various avatars of mobile users and then send them to your friends or family members.

When its built-in camera points to some famous sightseeing destinations, for example, the AR refers them to a huge library of database to find information about them, working together with AI Bixby technology to instantly generates information directly on top of the designated images.

When it works together with a built-in camera, it can do a magic enabling users to create their avatars and animated emoji pictures that look, sound and act like them.

Dubbed as AR Emoji, the feature uses a machine learning algorithm, which analyzes a 2D image of the users and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalization.

The feature uses a standard AGIF file format so users can share their emoji images across most third-party messaging platforms like KakaoTalk, Whatsapp and Line.

Another eye-catching new feature is the S9’s new camera system, which comes as a single lens on the S9 and a dual camera on the S9 Plus.

The new camera is Samsung’s first rollout with a mechanically adjustable aperture which can switch between a very bright f/1.5 to a smaller f/2.4 depending on exposure conditions.

The bright aperture lets in 28% more light than the S8’s f/1.7 lens, and the f/2.4 aperture is said to help prevent overexposure in bright scenes.

The camera app is able to switch between the apertures as necessary, or you can manually control them using the pro mode in the app.

The aperture can switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4, but cannot be set to values in between.

In addition to the new adjustable aperture, the Galaxy S9’s 12MP camera sensor includes second-generation dual-pixel autofocus tech for faster and more reliable focusing, improved multi-frame noise reduction for a claimed 30% better low-light performance.

The camera app has also been redesigned with quicker access to its various modes by swiping between them.

The Galaxy S9 Plus’ second rear-facing camera does not have the variable aperture feature but works similarly like the Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera system.

The two smartphones have phones have the same 8-megapixel f/1.7 autofocus front-facing camera as last year’s models.

The Galaxy S9 series camera has a super slow-motion feature to capture moments that pass like a flash.

Samsung used its exclusive Super Speed dual pixel image sensor that is integrated with a special DRAM chip. The dual image sensor enables taking pictures at 960 frames per second, which is 32 times faster than a normal camera sensor.

The entry price of Galaxy S9 starts from US$720 and the Galaxy S9 Plus costs $840. It will go on sale from March 16th       in Korea and U.S.

“The way we use our smartphones has changed as communication and self-expression have evolved,” said Koh Dong-jin, president and head of the IT and mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics.

“With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do the Galaxy S9 and S9+ enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, it’s a smartphone that’s designed to help them connect to others and express themselves in a way that’s unique and personal to them.”

Running on Android 8 Oreo, the new smartphone comes in a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display. Crack open it, you can find Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa chipset, or Samsung Exynos 9810 Octa chipset, 12 MP primary rear-facing camera and 8 MP front-facing camera sensor, 3000 mAh battery, 64 GB storage, and GB RAM. The phone is IP68 anti-dust and anti-water standard certified.
